My creative SCA journey on stuff I make and research I do…mostly in fibers (wool prep, spinning, weaving, tablet weaving) and glass beads, but could also include costumes, camping, cooking, and any other creative things that strike my fancy.
My Inkle Loom: Woodworker Episode
I’ve had a number of folks asking me about my loom, how it was made, where I bought it, etc. The answers are: it’s an Inkle loom–a 19th century invention (so…not medieval at all), unknown maker, and I bought it second hand more than 20 years ago. I think I bought it before I had kids…and my eldest is 23 now.
However, I am here to give you plans, dimensions, photos, and all the suggestions for improvement if I were to make it again. The discussion will be in the video, but this is where I wanted to post all the drawings (for what they’re worth–it’s been many a year since I took drafting, and I am not a proficient woodworker, so your mileage may vary).
I hope you are able to translate these images and drawings into a loom of your own!
And when you find that this little guy isn’t enough for you…

Your videos are spot on almost done with an Egyptian weave and only thing is remembering the direction you turn cards and how many times you turn .felt like I was with you weaving .first on inkle loom which I love.Iwill try some complex turning in future!
Where can I find the plans to build the larger, floor model loom? I love your videos and would love to get started. I need a loom, though and I’m the type, “In for a dime, in for a dollar.” and would like to just make the larger one instead of multiple sizes of looms.
Thank you so much for having this information and your tips out to be discovered just like the precious gems that they are!
Karen, aka Lady Elewys, I’ve watched most of your vids – I stil call myself a beginner. What I’m not getting is that when I only go forward or backward, the kink gets too much on the inkle loom. I see where you reverse direction, but doesn’t it change the pattern? How does one keep the same pattern if all cards turn one direction or the other? I think it’s time to re-watch the beginner’s video again.
There are ways to “reverse” weave, but there are several patterns that are “zero twist”, like the Estonian weave that I just finished.
For the floor loom, how do you use some of the ‘extra’ pegs? I try to number them in my head, but I can’t wrap how I would use the empty pegs in the top section. Can you post a picture of the numbered pegs on that beast? And, how many yards does it make?

This is a link for a monster loom plan. I gave that to a woodworker who built one for me–I don’t know if he made any changes to the plan, but it looks very similar.

Here’s a web site with plans to make the monster loom which shows it all warped up. I hope that’s helpful.
